How to install ...

NOTE:  Napoleon in Russia Project (NiRP) add-ons are being phased out over the next several months (years?) and converted into Battleground Expansion (BGE) add-ons. Only projects carefully crafted to meet the Napoleonic Archive playability and quality standards (detail here) are allowed in the BGE. Each NiRP module is 'cleaned up' by: (i) removing or adjusting poorly designed scenarios, (ii) repairing and improving maps, and (iii) adjusting PDT and OOB files to improve playability and representation of Napoleonic battles specific for this well-established Battleground (BG) gaming system.
The over-arching goal is to provide in the Napoleonic Archive only '...scenarios worth playing.' Changes to these add-ons as well as strategy discussions and battle analyses are discussed in Design Notes or Battle Guide files available in the BGE table above (see Ulm for example.)

As an example, the battle Gunzberg in the NiRP was recast into the battle of the same name in the BGE. The maps were completely rebuilt since the quality of the original maps was low, and the order of battle and scenario was recast for improved playability and historical simulation. It also better fits into a group of other battles that center around the historical maneuvers around Ulm in 1805. Battles that have been converted are marked with a gold star to the left of the abbreviation code.

FOOTNOTES

* Thanks to the Napoleon in Russia Project (NIRP) led by Jean-Marie Barbie (in France) for their hardwork on these great FREE game add-ons in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Their NIRP webpage is still active but none of the files are available. Also thanks to Greg Gorsuch (GG), John Pumphrey, and others who began this work on Eylau and Poltusk BG add-ons in the late 1990's.

&  Complexity is an approximate ranking of the scenarios in the add-on module. It allows a user to pick the size of battle before committing to downloading and installing the files. There are four levels: Low, Medium, High, and Huge. A scenario with a smaller map and fewer turns (under 20 or so) and smaller army strength (under ~30,000 each side) is Low. Huge is a multi-day battle with well over 100,000 men on each side on a larger mapboard. Borodino, Ligny, and Waterloo for example are High whereas Quatre Bras is Medium and the twin battles Ligny+Quatre Bras are High bordering on Huge. In cases that are borderline between two complexity levels, sometimes the nature of the battle tips the ranking.

#  Many of these NIRP and GG files are modified from their originals to better reflect historical accuracy, playability, aesthetics, and to correct mistakes. Therefore keep track of the revision number appended to the zip filenames. This allows the user to keep up to date with changes as they become available. The revision number will increment each time something is changed within the zip file. If uncertain of what revision you have on your add-on, look inside the "~REVISION.txt" file in your installed directory (this file is included with each distribution zip file) to check revision number.  (If this file is absent -- assuming you haven't deleted it, then the revision number is 0 and files are unchanged from the NiRP original.)  This text file "~REVISION.txt" gives a brief explanation of what was changed for each revision.

This symbol  is reserved for battles that have been accepted into the Battleground Expansion.

This symbol means the addon has been installed, tested, and PLAYED by webpage administrator or trusted others in at least a few turns of the primary scenarios proving that most bugs or errors are eliminated. A project that does not have a check has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL QUALITY OF THE CREATOR'S WORK. It has to do with entropy; as time progresses, things break. This might be due to file storage or to human error when trying to reconstruct another's disparate files that join to make a complete game directory, or operating system or game engine changes, and so on. Playing a few turns of each scenario is the only way to really know a scenario is correct.

+  This symbol means the addon has been installed, tested, and works for Windows XP and latest game engine Version 2.00 released in 2007 by Matrix Games. This is a quick check not verifying every little detail. The games should work in Windows Vista, though we have not yet tested them. Some add-on games do not have all 5 levels of map views. If one is missing, the view will look distorted and wrong. Simply change to another view and things will then appear correct. If there are problems, email administrator.

X  This symbal means the NiRP add-on has been rebuilt and is now available in the BGE group of projects.

_  This symbol means the addon has been installed and tested, but unfortunately some problems remain with the files. Either a file or two is missing or is corrupted preventing game play. However note that a missing mapboard view is NOT considered a "-" status since the game may still proceed. Usually the file missing is the largest 3D view (i.e., "Main2.bmp") though the game may still be played using the other 4 views (i.e., 2D small and large plus 3D small and medium).

$  Purchase NIR, BGW, and PTW originals from Matrix Games. All three games are on a single disk. The original game engines (on the CD) are required to play all the add-on games installed using above files. (You may use the older disks from Talonsoft, too. However updates from Matrix Games which may be coming for this great game engine will not then be available to you. Further, there are reports that the older Talonsoft game engine binaries have problems running on Windows Vista operating system. Thus purchasing the Matrix Games CD is the most cost effective purchase you can make: approximately US$50 and get about 150 games.)

[1],[2]  These files must be installed in order 1-2 since the second files overwrite some of those in the first.

%  The DLL files for the editor are NOT included in this zip file as these files are now present in the installed version from Matrix Games. Note however that the original (or backup copies of) Talonsoft game CD's are required to use the editor. The new Matrix Games CD isn't sufficient, or at least I haven't been able to get the editor to work with the new MG CD in. When in, the editor asks for the "Napoleon in Russia" CD. So even if you buy the new MG distribution CD, keep your old Talonsoft CDs so you can still use the scenario editor. It doesn't appear to be on the Matrix Games CD.
